When dentures fit properly, they should feel relatively comfortable and remain stable during everyday activities. However, dentures can become loose or stop fitting correctly over time as the gums and jawbone change. Wearing poorly fitting dentures can cause more than discomfort; it may also contribute to several oral health problems. The following 5 problems could potentially develop!
1. Gum Sores and Irritation
Loose or poorly fitting dentures can rub against the gums as you talk, chew and move your mouth. Repeated friction and pressure can cause sore spots, redness and irritation.
Continuing to wear uncomfortable dentures without having them adjusted may make these areas increasingly painful. Your dentist can examine the irritated areas and determine whether your dentures need adjustment or a reline.
2. Mouth Sores
Constant movement can cause dentures to repeatedly press against soft tissues in the mouth. This friction may result in painful sores that can make eating and speaking uncomfortable.
If you develop persistent sores, remove your dentures as directed by your dentist and schedule an appointment. They can determine whether the dentures are responsible and identify any other possible causes.
3. Difficulty Chewing
Dentures that do not fit securely can move while you eat. This instability can make chewing certain foods difficult and may cause you to avoid foods that require more chewing.
A poor fit may also make it harder to bite and chew comfortably. An adjustment, reline or replacement may help restore better stability and function.
4. Difficulty Speaking
Your dentures play an important role in helping your tongue and other structures produce clear speech. If they shift or move when you talk, you may have difficulty pronouncing certain sounds or may feel as though your dentures are constantly getting in the way.
Some adjustment is normal when you first receive dentures, but persistent movement or speech difficulties can indicate that your dentures need to be evaluated.
5. Increased Risk of Oral Infections
Poor-fitting dentures can create areas where food particles and plaque accumulate. If dentures are not cleaned properly, bacteria and fungi can multiply and contribute to oral infections, including denture-related stomatitis.
Removing and cleaning your dentures regularly, cleaning your gums and following your dentist’s instructions can help reduce this risk. Your dentist can also check your mouth for signs of infection during routine appointments.
A denture that feels loose, causes repeated sores or makes everyday activities difficult should not simply be tolerated. Your mouth naturally changes over time, and dentures that once fit comfortably may eventually require an adjustment or reline.
